Howie is still in development. These docs describe how Howie works at launch. Details may change over time.
Troubleshooting
Common problems and how to fix them.
Howie didn't act on a scam post
- Role position. Howie can't ban, kick or give a timeout to anyone whose highest role is above or equal to Howie's. Move Howie's role up.
- Missing permission. Run
/settingsand check the permission step. It lists anything missing. - Channel access. Howie only checks channels it can see. Check the channel's permissions for the Howie role.
- Exempt role. Howie ignores members with roles you marked as exempt, such as moderators.
- New scam. If none of the above apply, the scam may be one Howie hasn't seen.
Reports aren't showing up
- Make sure reports are on in
/settings. - Check that Howie can view, send messages and embed links in the report channel.
- If the report channel was deleted, pick a new one in
/settings.
Howie acted on a real message
- Check what happened. Your server's Audit Log shows every action Howie took, even with reports off. Howie's reports don't include the deleted message, so to see what was actually posted, you need a bot that logs deleted messages, such as Dyno or MEE6.
- Undo the action. Remove a timeout from the member's profile, or unban them in Server Settings under Bans. Kicked members can rejoin with an invite.
- Tell us. Email the report details to wtf [at] howie [dot] lol. We'll review the match and fix the fingerprint or rule that caused it.
A member's account was hijacked
They're a victim, not a scammer. Point them to these steps before letting them back in:
- Change their Discord password, which also logs out every other session.
- Turn on two-factor authentication in Discord's My Account settings.
- Review Authorized Apps and remove anything they don't recognize.
- Never scan Discord login QR codes sent by other people.
Once the account is secure, a moderator can lift the timeout or unban them.
I want to change Howie's AutoMod rules
Howie manages rules whose names start with Howie and may overwrite manual edits when it updates them. To add your own terms, create a separate AutoMod rule instead. To stop Howie from managing AutoMod, turn it off in /settings, which also removes Howie's rules.
Removing Howie
Kick Howie from the member list or remove it in Server Settings under Integrations. Before you do, turn AutoMod off in /settings so Howie removes its rules. Once Howie leaves, it can't remove them, though you can delete rules named Howie yourself. Howie deletes your server's settings when it's removed.
